SAD
There was a rich young ruler who was very wealthy who came to Jesus to find out how to experience God. He was a good young man who consistently obeyed the law. There was only one problem – he had something in his life that was more important to him than God. When Jesus told him the secret to unlock this supernatural life that he was longing for and that to experience it he would have to give up what was more important to him than God, he was distraught and left Jesus presence sad. What makes you sad?…. Hopefully not what made this guy sad!
Mk 10:21-22 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
He wanted to be a real disciple but had one hang up...money. How many want to be a real disciple of Jesus but are not willing to give up what makes them feel good. His money was his god. Do you have any gods? Some people get sad when they understand that their idols must be given up to experience real life. The Bible speaks of two types of sorrow; godly sorrow and worldly sorrow.
2 Cor 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
This young man in the story had worldly sorrow because it did not lead him to a change of mind (repentance). God wants us to have godly sorrow; this kind of sorrow leads us to change our mind and produces the supernatural life of God in us. May you be willing to lose your life to gain real life! May Jesus be your only God. May he indeed be your life! May you never end up like that young man…
