FIVE SPARROWS

Fear tries to step in and act like it owns the place in all of our lives. The Bible speaks of fear as a spirit. Apostle Paul told Timothy, his son in the faith, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2Timothy 1:7 Don’t ever allow the notion that fear is just a part of who I am, thinking it’s normal! It is not! Fear should get the right foot of fellowship, if you know what I mean. You know - forcefully kicked out! Someone once told me, jokingly, “I will hit you so hard that your great-grandpa will feel it.” Yes! We should take a proverbial bat to fear and send it far into the distant past! Fear is a spiritual force that is trying to keep us from the great things God has in store for us! Listen to Jesus' words.

Luke 12:6-7 Dear friends, don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do any more to you after that.

5 But I’ll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell. Yes, he’s the one to fear.

6“What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them.

7 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So, don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

Wow! Jesus is saying that even if someone is trying to kill you, don’t be afraid! Hello?! Jesus is saying that even when it comes down to your very life being threatened, there should be no room for fear! Fear is an evil enemy, an agent of Satan sent to keep you from fulfilling the great destiny God has for you!

So, how much were two copper coins worth during Jesus' day? Well if you were to compare it to the wages of today, those two coins would’ve been worth nine or $10. Think about it. If God cares that much about a sparrow that is only worth two dollars, how much more does he care about you?! Indeed, Jesus declares that even the hairs of your head are all numbered! What?! Does that mean when I combed my hair this morning and some hair fell out that God knew about it? Yes, indeed it does! God is so up in your business that every single detail matters to him! Pastor, does he know that I have a mole on the side of my neck? Well, the Bible doesn’t say so, but it would stand to reason that if he knows every single hair that falls to the ground, he must know all about that mole, and not only that – every freckle! :-)

My dear friend, God’s care for you is more intimate and passion than you have ever dreamed! He’s in love with you! He does not love you because you do it all right; he loves you because you are his! All your mistakes and sin have been paid for! When God looks at you, he sees perfection! Hebrews 10:14 says, “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” Do you and I need to change? Yes! God has made perfect those who are being made holy! We are in a process, and the Holy Spirit is doing the work in us as we surrender to God’s love and grace!

Can you imagine how intimately connected God is with you? Do you know that you are his dream come true? Next time you think God is mad at you and has given up on you, take a moment to remember your worth, your hair and the…
