GOD’S UNBREAKABLE COVENANT WITH MAN

Part 5

Jesus Christ came to this world to be the sacrifice for the ultimate covenant God would make with man. This covenant would be so powerful that it would deliver humanity from the death grip of shame, condemnation, and fear. It will reconcile us back to forever intimacy you with God.

When Jesus went to the cross, he went alone! The covenant that God was going to make on our behalf would be a covenant that we could not earn, deserve or even break. The book of Galatians in the New Testament records the stark rebuke of Apostle Paul to the church at Galatia, who were being deceived into thinking that by their performance they could enhance their right standing with God and, therefore, increase in their favor and power of God. Consider his scorching words to them.

Galatians 3:1-5 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

Apostle Paul made it abundantly clear that human effort would never be able to make the realities of God known in a person’s life. Furthermore, Apostle Paul continues by declaring that those who rely on being right with God through the observance of the law are under a curse. He said, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of the law. Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” Gal 3:10-11

Jesus came to consummate God’s covenant of righteousness with man. It would be his flesh that would be torn and his blood that would be shed to make humanity one hundred percent right with God. Apostle Paul made it clear that no amount of works would ever be able to bring us into a right relationship with God, only the sacrifice of Jesus and the shedding of his precious blood!

Just as the covenant God made with Abraham required a physical sign – circumcision, so the covenant that God made through Jesus Christ requires a sign. The sign that God commands is the sign of the circumcision of the heart that can only be done by the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 2:11-12 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

In the old covenant, circumcision was a cutting away of natural flesh, but in the new covenant, circumcision is a cutting away of spiritual flesh or the sinful nature.

When someone truly gives their life to Christ, the sign that they are really in God’s family is that the power of their sinful nature has been cut off – they have different desires. Indeed, their heart begins to want everything that God wants and reject things that God hates.

It is of utmost importance that you understand that your sin cannot break the covenant God made with you. No amount of good works can tap you into it! Don’t miss tomorrow because tomorrow we are discussing the keys to tapping into the power of the ultimate covenant of Jesus Christ in part 6 of…
