Eternity in Our Hearts
Have you ever had someone tell you they are an agnostic, atheist, or do not believe in God? Interestingly, God says that He has put in the hearts of every person the reality of eternity and the knowing that He is real. In other words, at the deepest part of every person is a knowing that something unseen and powerful is the reason for their existence. Take a look at these Scriptures.
Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NLT)
Psalm 14:1a The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
Romans 1:18-21 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Somewhere down deep inside, everyone knows that there is something greater than us as human beings! People may try to avoid it or hide from it, but the reality of God is chasing them down through their conscience and the immensity, complexity, perfection, and beauty of all creation. Yes, there is a God, and He is on his throne! To know him and to serve him is to experience heaven on earth!
The fulfillment and ecstasy people try to attain through the pleasures this world offers them leave them emotionally and spiritually bankrupt, scarred by graphic disappointment. On the contrary, intimacy with God causes family pleasure, but a life that is empowered and filled with everything that brings abundant life!
Psalm 16:11 You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fulness of joy; at your right hand, there are pleasures forevermore.
In God is everything a person could ever want or need! Indeed, He is the longing of every person even though most understand it. I never argue with someone who claims they are an atheist or agnostic because I know inside them is a desperate longing for the love that only comes from God. Whenever I encounter these kinds of people, I do everything I can to let them know how precious and valuable they are! When I share the intensity of God’s love with them, they experience God even though they may not understand it. Often, they start weeping and don’t even know why. Why? Because they are experiencing the Eternal God of the universe and his incredible love for them! Wow! How beautiful!
