The Definition of Greatness

Yesterday we discussed how servanthood is what love does. It is important to note that the most significant fruit of the Holy Spirit is love. Apostle Paul wrote an amazing statement about love that bears witness to the entirety of the Word of God; here it is.

1Cor 13:13  And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Wow! That is a profound statement! The greatest thing you will ever acquire is the love of God. A person who lives connected to God is a person who lives a life of love. The natural response of a person filled with love is to be a servant, and because love is the greatest and servanthood is what love does, the greatest in the kingdom is the one who is the greatest servant.

Mark 10:42-45 You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

It is interesting that John chapter 13 and 1 Corinthians 13, and especially verse 13, focus on love and what it does. In John chapter 13, Jesus washes the disciples’ feet and encourages them to do the same. Carefully read the following verses; they are key to being great in the kingdom of God.

Jn 13:12-17  When he (Jesus) had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus was and is the greatest to have ever walked this earth, yet he was the greatest servant! Please let that sink in! A person’s degree of greatness can be measured by the degree of their service to others. So here’s the question: How are you serving those around you? Are people richer after having spent time with you? Is your life empowering others, or are you manipulating life so that others can empower you? Jesus said, “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life away as a ransom for many.” Mat 20:28.

This concept of servanthood is becoming more and more valuable to me! I want my life to count! I want those around me to be empowered with all the goodness of God!

My dearest friend, I am praying today that this matter of servanthood will significantly impact you. I can assure you that it is key to fulfilling your destiny and living a life of significance. I pray that this encouraging note inspires you to live as a servant more than ever because servanthood is…
