The Key Choices

We have spent several days talking about the importance and power of a positive attitude, but a positive attitude is not where the story ends. The purpose of a positive attitude is to cause us to do great things! You see, your choices today define what your life will be like tomorrow.

At a crucial moment in Israel’s history, Joshua stood before the people and said, “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:14-15.

Serving God is a choice. How we respond to the instructions of the Holy Spirit will determine how far we can go in life! Though everyone is making choices, not everyone is making the right choices. Every day, countless billions of choices are being made – everything from Vladimir Puritan’s choice to invade Ukraine to choosing to get up and follow your routine again today.

While some choose to sit at home and feed off the government, others will decide to get a job and support their families. Some will choose to buy stocks today, and others will opt to sell, but not everyone will make the right choice.

Some people are paying attention to the signs of the times and have chosen to prepare for what’s ahead, but many are not. Solomon said, “A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.”  Prov 22:3.

I find it interesting that all those people making choices, for the most part, feel justified in their choices. Solomon realized this dilemma and said, “All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart. Prov 21:2.

It takes honesty and humility to put your choices before God and let him decide what is right and best. If I have been making the wrong choices, then I will need to be honest and humble enough to change. John Maxwell once said, “if you don’t change the direction you are going, then you’re likely to end up where you’re heading.” If I continue on the same road, I will end up with the same results. Someone once said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result each time. If my life isn’t going in the right direction, only I have the power to make the choices necessary to go in a different direction. It won’t happen by accident!

During the reign of King Ahab, the children of Israel were corrupt, having been seduced into serving the gods of Baal and Ashtoreth. Earlier, Elijah had prophesied that it would not rain for three years, and it didn’t. At the end of those three years, he assembled the entire community to mount caramel and said to them, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” 1Kings 18:21

I believe this is a word for the church today! Church, how long will you waver between two opinions – if God is God, serve him!

The word of God makes it clear that it is faith that moves the mighty hand of God and causes the purposes of God’s kingdom to advance. God is longing for us to go deep into his love and grace. The power to change this world is wrapped up in our choice to surrender to, and fully receive, the grace of God.

“Destiny is not a matter of chance – it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.” William Jennings Bryan

Because of Elijah’s obedience to the Holy Spirit, that day on Mount caramel proved to be a moment where heaven invaded earth! Many in the nation of Israel turned back to the Lord, and God’s blessing came once again.

As I pray for you today, my dearest friend, I’m trusting that you are listening to the Holy Spirit for the choices that need to be made in your life. Without a doubt, one of the greatest keys to a life of significance is…
