He Can Use Me
Hey! It’s Christmas Eve! Are you excited? What a wonderful time of year! What a wonderful time for family and for celebrating the coming of our Lord Jesus! I hope you are doing great and that your plans for Christmas are progressing along well!
One of the remarkable things about Christmas is its heartwarming reminder that God often pursues his purposes much differently than we do. When a significant purpose needs to be accomplished, we as humans usually seek out the brightest and the best to accomplish the job. Though there is wisdom in such actions, that is not how God usually does it. God often chooses the lowly and the most unlikely for his highest purposes.
Do you remember the story of when the prophet Samuel went to pick a king for Israel? He went to the house of Jesse, and all the sons, except David, were brought before the prophet. As the eighth son of Jesse, David was assigned to the lowliest tasks and was the least important. David, a shepherd boy, was so unimportant and unlikely to be chosen king that they left him to care for the sheep in the fields. After the prophet had gone through each of the boys, starting with the oldest, he said, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 1 Samuel 16:11
As you know, it was David that God chose to be the king of Israel. It is mind-blowing to me that the one who was considered the most unworthy to be at the festive occasion would be the one God would choose. The least likely to succeed not only became king but would later be referred to as the father of Jesus. (Luke 1:32) Ironically, at the coming of Jesus, God again chose to use the most unlikely to herald his arrival –.the shepherds. Yes, to these humble men, God sent his angel to reveal the powerful coming of Jesus.
Luke 2:8-15 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
If you’ve ever felt like you are someone too insignificant for God to use, think again! To reveal his arrival, God did not go to the temple to get one of the prominent priests or even one of the military leaders – he went to the fields and found some shepherds. I love it!
Christmas is a wonderful reminder of how God often uses the lowly, rejected, and deemed unworthy to facilitate his most significant purposes! I pray that you will let this thought sink deeply into your heart! I love the song written by Kim and DeWitt Jones that says, “If you can use anything Lord, you can use me. If you can use anything, Lord, you can use me. Take my hands, Lord, and my feet – touch my heart, Lord, speak through me. If you can use anything, Lord, you can use me.”
Oh yes! This is your season – now is your time to prosper! God has given you this moment to launch out and fulfill the great things he has prepared for you to accomplish!
My dearest friend, if you have ever felt unworthy or not skilled enough to do God’s purpose, allow this Christmas season to remind you that God often uses the most unlikely! Though David was not arrogant or self-seeking, he was available for God to use, which is the mindset God desires for you!
My heart goes out to you as I pray for you today! I am asking God to encourage you at the deepest level! I am asking him to give you the wisdom to receive the mindset of David, which was – if God can use anything …
