The Greatest Sin

Some people think that all sin is equal, and no matter what you do, it’s all considered the same to God. But is this really true? Just as murdering one time would make a person a murderer, even the smallest sins make a person a sinner. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This Scripture declares that all forms of sin are categorized under one word – sin, and its penalty is death. The word death that Scripture speaks of is eternal separation from God, not the death of a physical body. Sin is what causes a person to be separated from God. When a person sins, their conscience condemns them and separates them from God, but there is no condemnation for those who live in Christ. Romans 8:1

Back to the main question – Are all sins equal in God’s sight? What does the Bible say?

John 19:11 Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” (NLT)

1 Cor 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. (ESV)

As in a human court of law, some offenses carry greater consequences, so it is with God’s eternal court. Therefore, without divine intervention, I would be highly guilty! The most profound and exciting news in the whole universe is that God has created a way through Jesus Christ to live in freedom from the bondage and penalty of sin.

John 3:18  Whoever believes in him (Jesus) is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

Therefore, the greatest sin of all is refusing to believe in God’s provision for our right standing with him through the sacrifice of Jesus. The only sin God cannot forgive is the sin of not believing and receiving what he has provided through Jesus. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Living a life that looks like Jesus comes from the empowerment of grace, not human effort. Somebody once said, “The me I see is the me I’ll be.” The thoughts that dominate the corridors of our minds are what determine our future. To live like Jesus, I must think like Jesus!

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (NIV)

Those who will humbly, like a child, receive their right standing with God through the blood of Jesus are those who will step into the power that God’s grace provides! The grace of God, provided through the blood of Jesus, gives us the legal authority to see ourselves as righteous, and what we behold is what we become! Yes! Because of the blood of Jesus, God sees you as perfect! Talk about amazing! The kicker is, when we see ourselves as God sees us, we become what he sees us as!

Oh, my dear friend, this is so important! This revelation has the power to revolutionize the whole world. Living inside the grace of God is the most rewarding, exhilarating, and abundant life there is! I am convinced that billions of hurting people desperately long to experience the reality of what it would be like to live in the truth you just read! Oh, that we, as the body of Christ, would live lives empowered by the precious grace of God!

My dear friend, of this, you can be sure; putting the full weight of your trust in the sacrifice of Jesus for your right standing with God is proof that you are not committing…
