The Powerful Life of Rest

Maybe you remember this song written by Steve Green.

Every day they pass me by – I can see it in their eyes. Empty people filled with care Headed who knows where. On they go through private pain, Living fear to fear; laughter hides their silent cries, Only Jesus hears.

We are called to take His light to a world where wrong seems right. What could be too great a cost for sharing life with one who’s lost? Through His love, our hearts can feel all the grief they bear. They must hear the words of life; only we can share.

People need the Lord; people need the Lord. At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door. People need the Lord; people need the Lord. When will we realize people need the Lord?

What a powerful song and how true it is! More than ever, our world needs to know the truth of God’s love that is reconciling the world to himself through Christ. So what will bring about the necessary change our hurting world so desperately needs? The secret key to changing this world is simple trust and rest! Rest? Are you serious? Yes – rest! The world and much of the church are still living under the law and therefore bound to the powerless lifestyle of self-righteousness and darkness. Does the following scripture remind you of what is going on in the world right now?

2Ti 3:1-5 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

What is the first sign of the last days? – People will be lovers of themselves. You see, the law is not about trusting God; it is all about trusting self. The law causes people to glorify themselves by providing a false opportunity to see themselves as righteous and holy. But, never forget this most important scripture – The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 1 Corinthians 15:56

The power behind sin is the law! Yes! The law causes people to sin even more.

Rom 5:20 The law was added so that the trespass might increase.

Many try to live good enough to deserve God and his abundant life, but their efforts result in lifestyles opposite God’s righteousness and love. Often people of the world look at those who claim Christianity and wonder why they are so mean and hateful. They are this way because they are still living in their own righteousness. Look at what Jesus said to the Jews who thought they were righteous because they studied the Scriptures diligently and lived by the law.

John 5:37-42 The Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them, you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. 41 “I do not accept praise from men, 42, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.”

Even though they studied the Scriptures diligently, Jesus said they did not have the word of God in them, and neither did they have the love of God in them. Wow! You see, only love can fulfill the righteous requirements of the law. (see Rom 13:10 Gal 5:14) When you know that God loves you, intimacy with him becomes your way of life. When people trust the provision of Jesus to make them right with God and rest in his love, they automatically begin to live like God! Oh, what power is released into the world through those who believe God and rest in his love!

The world desperately needs a demonstration of God, not just knowledge about God. Jesus said, “By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” John 13:35 The world doesn’t care about our Christian doctrine; they want to see God and his love in action! The faith that causes us to rest in God releases the power to change the world!

When you see all the negative things happening in the world, let it be a catalyst for you to trust God enough to rest in him, living a life free from worry and fear! Remember – perfect love drives out fear! 1 John 4:18 I can assure you that amazing thing are on God’s agenda! There is no better time than right now to be living in…
