Servanthood Is What Love Does

I’m sure you have had the displeasure of meeting people who are exceptionally big in their own eyes. They’re the kind of people who assume they are above everyone else and think everyone should bow to them and serve them. But the mark of the truly great person is found in the way they honor and serve others.

The thought that Jesus, the King, and Creator of the universe, came to be a servant is so heartwarming! It tells you who he is; Jesus was and is the personification of love. You see, being a servant is all about giving – giving of one’s self for others. The natural byproduct of true Christianity is servanthood. How do I know? The demonstration of God’s love for us was the sacrifice of Jesus.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Why did God do this? He did it because of his desire to give us everything! God is fiercely in love with us and wants to spend all eternity lavishing his love and goodness upon us.

Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

If God was willing to give his only Son for us, why would we ever doubt his desire to provide us with good things? Jesus said, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:11. God loves us more than we could ever imagine, and his desire to bless us is beyond anything we’ve ever dreamed!

God’s desire to serve and bless us should give us a clear picture of who he is and how we should relate to him. Yes, if he loves us like that – if he has paid for all of our sins, should we not go to him with confidence to receive from him.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Here’s another fundamental question – If the God of the universe was willing to humble himself and become a servant, shouldn’t we also? Romans 12:10 says, “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.” A couple of verses later, it says, “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:13. These Scriptures let me know that serving is a matter of the heart. The closer a person gets to the heart of God, the more they will serve like Jesus.

Serving is also about relationship. The more relationship I have with someone, the more I can discern how to serve them. This is one of the reasons why God wants us not to forsake getting together as the body of Christ. We need each other! Believers meeting together on a consistent basis provides the opportunity for genuine relationships and true servanthood. True Christianity is not measured by how many Scriptures one knows or how much biblical knowledge a person has; it is measured by love and servanthood. Jesus said that “they (the world) will know that you are my disciples by your love for one another.” John 13:35.

My dearest partner in Christ, I pray that you are being drawn to the glorious life of servanthood. Why? Because God is love and…
