You Will Become

It is interesting that we become what we think about the most. Sadly, when we were born into this world, we were immediately given the task of doing what is right, and soon the way we would view ourselves would be based upon our own righteousness. As we got older, we became more aware of our inability to fulfill all of those righteous requirements. We, therefore, found ourselves with scarred consciences and the inability to experience the wonderful life God intended for us.

Being bound to the law is like being married to a meticulously accurate and perfectly neat husband who expects you to fulfill every one of his standards while not willing to lift a single finger to help. This is what happened to us as a human race when Adam and Eve partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (the law). As soon as they ate, they immediately experienced the repercussions of guilt, shame, condemnation, and fear. They were immediately bound to the failing efforts of their own righteousness and bore children who would live cursed with the same guilt and shame. But, there is great hope for us – take a look!

Rom 4:14-15 If God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary, and the promise is pointless. 15 For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it. (The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!)

Romans 10:4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for those who believe.

Interestingly, our new marriage partner, Jesus, came and gave us a law with a much higher standard than the law of Moses (the law regarding external works). Jesus gave us the new law of love which is not just about outward actions but the very motives of the heart. But, unlike our old marriage partner (the law), our new marriage partner (Jesus) is not only the One who has given us this new law, but he is the One who carries out the perfection of that law within us and through us.

The Bible says, “The law came through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17  We no longer look at the law as our standard of righteousness or, as you might say, our right standing with God, but we now look at Jesus Christ, the perfect lamb who grants righteousness (right standing with God) to all who believe! The new way of life given to us by Jesus fulfills all the law’s righteous requirements and is carried out by God’s Spirit within us.

When Jesus was asked which of the commandments was the greatest, he said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ This All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Matthew 22:37-40

Romans 5:5 The love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Okay, so here’s what is so amazing: when we simply surrender to the work of the Holy Spirit within us, the life of God’s love will naturally flow through us, and all the purposes of heaven will be accomplished!

So, you might be asking, “what am I supposed to do?” The answer is, choose to change your thought life! Your input will determine your outlook, and your outlook will determine your output, and your output will determine your future. The most important job God has given you is to set your mind on things above. Surrender your heart and mind to the truth of God’s amazing love for you! You can be confident that what you think about the most,…
