The only thing that God never wanted man to partake of was the knowledge of good and evil. Interestingly, it was the only thing Satan always wanted us to have. From the very beginning, the lie of all lies and the sin of all sins (the knowledge of good and you will, i.e., the law) is still, today, the lie of all lies and the sin of all sins.

The knowledge of good and evil is the enemy’s primary tool to bring about his sinister plan against God and us; he uses it to bring about shame, guilt, and separation from God and his love. In Genesis 2:16-17, God declared to Adam and Eve that the day they partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil would be the day they would die. Instead of trusting in God’s love and good opinion of them, Adam and Eve chose to doubt God and believe the serpent’s lie. When Adam and Eve partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, this is what happened:

Genesis 3:7-11  Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves apronlike girdles. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you? He said, I heard the sound of You [walking] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid myself. And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?

Immediately after Adam and Eve partook of the tree, the following things happened:

1.    Their eyes were opened

2.    They realized they were naked and sewed fig leaves together as coverings for themselves

3.    They hid from God

Sadly, many people hide from God today; they feel naked and unsafe to be uncovered before him! Many, like Adam and Eve, live their lives under the weight of condemnation and shame because they see themselves as not living up to the moral standards of the law.

The inferior identity of guilt, shame, and fear was the death that God declared would result from Adam and Eve partaking of the do-it-yourself tree. Those who try to feel right about themselves through their performance will live a life never feeling good enough. This inferior identity leaves humanity in continual condemnation, separated from God because of their shame and guilt. They live feeling as if they must do more or perform better to get God’s attention, approval, and blessing.

It is because of humanity’s guilty conscience that Jesus came. Because of God’s great love for us, he sent Jesus to deliver us from this inferior identity and to bring us into the life of being fully clothed in our original identity. Your original identity declares you as God’s masterpiece – his pride, joy, and ultimate love! Living by works is the life of self and produces the mentality of failure. Living by faith is the life of freedom inside God’s love and good opinion of us. Those who live in their original identity of being loved and perfect in God’s sight will naturally fulfill the law’s righteous requirements. It is hurt people who hurt people, and it is those who feel loved who love others.

Romans 13:10 Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Never forget; the me I see is the me I’ll be. Those who surrender to what God believes about them become what He believes about them!

It’s time to live in what is rightfully yours through the blood of Jesus! It is time to live knowing you are completely loved, approved of, and adored!

The good news of Jesus has the power to release you from the chains of shame and guilt and launch you into your true identity – Jesus! Yes! If you want to know what God thinks of you – look at Jesus! He is more than an example for you; he is the example of you! Every time God looks at you, he sees Jesus! Your sins are forgiven! You are deeply loved!
