The Power of a Positive Attitude

We’ve talked quite a bit about keys to a life of significance in the past few weeks. I believe there is another key that we should take a close look at, and that is the key of a positive attitude. Our God is a positive God! Thank you, Jesus! In his precious Word, he repeatedly tells us to do things that cause a positive outlook.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Now, that’s a positive attitude! If you are always thinking positive thoughts, you will always have a positive attitude! That’s why Paul instructed the church at Colossae, saying, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:1-2

Zig Ziglar says, “It is your attitude, more than your aptitude, that will determine your altitude.” In other words, your talents and skills are not nearly as important as your attitude. Attitude tells more about your future than your IQ, grade point average, or almost any other factor you can think of.

There is an interesting article written by Dr. Alan Zimmerman where he discusses a ground-breaking book by Dr. Martin Seligman called Learned Optimism. Dr. Zimmerman wrote that Dr. Seligman found that negative people get sick more often, are divorced more frequently, and raise kids who get in more trouble.

Dr. Seligman even found that negative people make less money. In one long-term study of 1500 people, group A or 83% of the people took their particular jobs because they believed they could make lots of money. Only 17% of them — or group B — took their jobs because they happened to love their jobs.

Twenty years later, the two groups had produced 101 millionaires. The amazing thing is, only one of those millionaires came from group A, but 100 of them came from group B. That’s significant.

Even more amazing, over 70% of those millionaires never went to college. And over 70% of those who became CEOs graduated in the bottom half of their class. Seligman concluded that it was their attitude, more than their aptitude, which determined their altitude. – Dr. Alan Zimmerman

The prophet Jeremiah wrote, “the joy of the Lord will be your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10. Solomon said, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

Without a doubt, God wants you and me to have a positive attitude! Your attitude is so powerful that it can bring healing not only to you but to those around you! God wants your mind to be so filled with his precious thoughts that you can’t help but live with a positive attitude! As the first day of the rest of your life, today begins a new chapter for you!
